THIS DOESN’T MAKE SENSE

Pastor Eli Nelson

At My City Church, we believe that everything we have—our time, talents, and finances—belongs to God. In this week's message, Pastor Elishaun breaks down the biblical foundation of generosity, stewardship, and financial faith, using Leviticus 25 to reveal God's wisdom in giving and provision.

Why Does God Command Rest? Understanding Leviticus 25

God commanded the Israelites to let the land rest every seventh year, a principle known as the Sabbath year. At first, this seems impractical—how could they survive without planting or harvesting? But this command wasn’t about withholding provision; it was about trusting God as the ultimate provider.

“When God tells you to do something, it’s not because He’s trying to take from you—it’s because He wants to give to you.” — Pastor Elishaun

This principle applies to our personal finances today. Many of us struggle with fear of not having enough, leading us to hold on tightly to our money. But biblical stewardship means understanding that our finances belong to God, and when we live generously, God blesses abundantly.

Breaking Free from the Spirit of Mammon

Money is a powerful force in our lives. Jesus spoke about money in 40% of His parables, not because He needed it, but because He knew how easily it could control us. The spirit of mammon is the love of money—the belief that money dictates our security and happiness. But as believers, we are called to trust in God, not wealth.

📖 Luke 16:10 – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”

When we hold onto money as our security, we miss the opportunity to allow God to be our provider. But when we give generously, we open the door for God’s supernatural provision.

What Does Biblical Generosity Look Like?

Generosity isn’t about giving because we have extra—it’s about trusting God first. In 1 Chronicles 29:12, King David gives over $20 billion worth of resources to build the temple. Why? Because he understood that everything belongs to God.

“Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things.” – 1 Chronicles 29:12

Many people say, "I will give when I have enough," but the key to unlocking financial blessings is giving before we think we can afford it. God’s provision is already in motion, but He waits for us to take a step of faith.

💡 Key Takeaway: Your financial breakthrough is in your obedience, not your overflow.

The Power of Tithing: Unlocking God's Blessings

Many believers struggle with the concept of tithing (giving 10% of their income to God) because they feel they can’t afford it. However, in Malachi 3:10, God challenges His people to test Him in generosity:

📖 Malachi 3:10"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."

Tithing isn’t about losing money—it’s about planting a seed that God multiplies. Just like in Leviticus 25, where God commanded the Israelites to trust Him for their seventh-year provision, He is calling us to trust Him in our giving today.

Stewarding What God Has Given You

God entrusts each of us with resources, skills, and opportunities. Whether you have a small paycheck or a successful business, what matters is how you steward what God has given you.

Steps to Financial Stewardship:
✔️ Acknowledge that all you have belongs to God.
✔️ Tithe consistently, trusting God to meet your needs.
✔️ Give beyond the tithe with generosity in your heart.
✔️ Manage your finances wisely, avoiding unnecessary debt.
✔️ Trust God's timing—your sixth-year sowing leads to your ninth-year blessing.
